THE EVOLVING ROLE OF PHYSICIANS IN SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Assess the changes in long term care due to ACO’s and develop a framework on how to strategize to manage these changes.

ILLINOIS POLST

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the POLST Paradigm and how patient wishes are determined and documented in a standard form.
  • Foresee how POLST documentation will build upon and improve existing advance directives.
  • Describe the relationship between a Power of Attorney for Healthcare and a POLST form, and when each is appropriate for patient completion.
  • Recognize the importance of healthcare staff being properly educated regarding interpreting POLST forms during emergencies and other relevant circumstances.

CREATING AN ETHICS COMMITTEE IN LONG TERM CARE

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Use the new AMDA Tool Kit to assist their facility in starting and maintaining an ethics committee. 
  • Develop a format for ethics case reports and analysis.
  • Utilize the facility ethics committee for assistance in education and updating policies and procedures on current issues such as POLST and psychotropic consent

DATA SANITY

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the differences between quality, quality assurance and quality improvement.
  • Describe QA principles and tools.
  • Differentiate between run and control charts and how they may be effective in long term care.

BILLING AND CODING

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Grasp the E & M coding system as it pertains to managing nursing home codes.
  • Assess how to use the medical claims processing manual to determine the need for visits in the nursing home setting.

AMDA PHYSICIAN COMPETENCIES

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the rationale behind the development of nursing home competencies.
  • Appreciate the roles and responsibilities of attending physicians in nursing homes.
  • Describe the relationship between medical staff organization, physician competency and commitment to overall quality of care.
