The Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center will honor two Los Angeles poetry icons at its 3rd Annual Awards Dinner on Sunday, July 14. Honorees will be Eloise Klein Healy, L.A.'s first poet Laureate, and renowned poetry promoter Mike "The Poet" Sonksen. The event will take place at the Church in Ocean Park, 255 Hill St., starting at 5:30 p.m.
Healy, who is Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing Emerita at Antioch University, will receive Beyond Baroque's George Drury Smith Award, which is named for the Center's founder and awarded for outstanding literary merit. Sonksen will be presented BB's Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his tireless long-term contributions to the art of poetry and L.A.'s poetry community.
Healy also serves as Director of the Women's Studies Program at Cal State Northridge University and teaches at Immaculate Heart College. Sonksen is a literary blogger at KCET-TV and conducts notable poetry/history tours throughout L.A.
Beyond Baroque, founded in Venice in 1968, is the oldest of the nation's oldest existing independent literary centers and among its largest. In addition to producing frequent readings featuring both local and nationally renowned literary figures, BB conducts several free writing workshops, a Young Poets' Development Program, a New Music Program and a visual arts program in its Mike Kelley Gallery. It also maintains a vast archive of L.A.'s finest literary works.
