About This Course

For Managers

Make sure your team is getting the most out of JavaScript and jQuery. Many developers use only a fraction of what these tools provide, leaving behind techniques that can improve performance, code maintainability, and portability. Three days with Bocoup's trainers—developers by day (and night)—will make your developers smarter programmers, quicker problem-solvers, and more valuable resources within your organization.

For Developers

Developers attending this three-day course will receive hands-on, personalized JavaScript and jQuery training from the experts at Bocoup. By the end of the session, attendees will have a full grasp of the jQuery API and a deeper understanding of jQuery's internals. In addition, attendees will learn best-practice approaches to extending jQuery with custom plugins and integrating these extensions into applications.

The class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, including morning refreshments and lunch.

Our training takes a step-by-step approach, solidifying fundamental concepts and building on them to leave each attendee with a more thorough understanding of both JavaScript and jQuery.

On the first day, attendees will focus on understanding JavaScript, including best practices around code organization and debugging in the browser. On day two, jQuery will be introduced, with a focus on selecting elements, traversing and manipulating the DOM and jQuery code organization best practices. On the final day, attendees will learn about the jQuery event system, including event delegation and custom events, AJAX including JSON, JSONP and Deferreds, jQuery effects, and best practices around extending jQuery with custom plugins.

 Day 1

  • Introduction
  • Debugging JavaScript
  • A JavaScript Primer
  • JavaScript Gotchas
  • Objects and Functions
  • Type Coercion
  • Truthy and Falsy
  • Closures, IIFEs and The Module Pattern
  • Code Organization
  • Inheritance
  • The DOM

Day 2

  • Getting Started with jQuery
  • Selecting Elements
  • Manipulating the Page
  • Traversing the DOM and Chaining
  • jQuery Utility Methods

Day 3

  • Handling Events and Event Delegation
  • AJAX and Deferreds
  • Enhancing with Effects
  • jQuery Best Practices
  • Extending jQuery with Plugins

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a code editor and and browser. We strongly recommend the Google Chrome browser, although the latest Firefox (with the Firebug extension installed) will work in a pinch.

We also recommend one of the following text editors for Mac: TextMate, MacVim, Coda or Windows: E TextEditor, Notepad++, UltraEdit, but the most important thing is that attendees use a text editor they're comfortable with.

In addition, some experience with programming and front-end web development is recommended. Basically, you don't need to be (and probably shouldn't be) a JavaScript or jQuery master to get the most from this class, but familiarity with CSS selectors and concepts like functions and variables will be helpful.

Finally, we encourage you to read Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts before the class. You'll probably want to re-read it after the class, too.
