Jennicet Gutierrez is our keynote speaker. Gutierrez publicly challenged President Barack Obama about the condition of transgender immigrants in detention centers. Her actions have challenged the LGBT movement to be more inclusive and pro-active around issues facing our transgender community members
Together with NAVIGATE, the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, and the Immigration History Research Center, the University of Minnesota Law School’s Center for New Americans is proud to co-sponsor the screening of ABRAZOS, the critically acclaimed film by director Luis Argueta.
It is estimated that 4.5 million U.S. citizen children have at least one undocumented parent; many part of extended families divided for decades by the broken U.S immigration system. ABRAZOS follows 14 Guatemalan-American children on their transformational journey from Minnesota to Guatemala to meet grandparents and siblings for the first time.
The screening (facebook event page) will take place at 8pm immediately following the 2015 NAVIGATE | Minnesotanos Awards at the Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis. All are welcome to the film screening and all are encouraged (but not required) to attend the NAVIGATE awards event which begins at 5:00 p.m. Both the film and awards ceremony are free, though registration is requested for the gala.
