The Charitable Society of Charleston is a volunteer organization in Charleston made up of young professionals committed to providing for the needs of local non-profit organizations that help individuals in the community. Members are particularly interested in organizations that serve children, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and community wellness. Some of The Charitable Society of Charleston's annual events include the Reindeer Run, Oyster Roast, Harbor Cruise & more.
The Green Heart Project builds urban gardens and farm-to-school programs in the Charleston Area. With a high value placed on health, education, and community, it pairs local volunteers with students to maintain school gardens while reinforcing academic standards and personal responsibility. By doing so it looks to educate students and volunteers about healthy, local foods while fostering lasting relationships and building community. Founded in 2009 as a small-school garden project, the Green Heart Project has evolved into a comprehensive farm-to-school program which not only leverages an expanded school garden as an outdoor classroom for hands-on and experiential learning, but grows fresh produce for the school cafeteria, teaches culinary classes to students and their families, and provides opportunities for students to learn about food through field trips to farms, restaurants, and other organizations which help to sustain our local food system.
