34th Tchoupitoulas Bar-a-thon
Friday, May 15, 2015
size doesn't (always) matter.
We've reached the perfect size - why grow bigger? We were 95% online registration, from volunteers to the crusty curmudgeons who ran the thing back in 1983, to first-timers. This year, the goal is 100%. So read with a purpose...and tell your friends.
July 4, 2014 (11:31PM) - Monday May 11, 2015 (1:30PM CDT). Regular Registration. You pay $40.00 and your wildest dreams come true: Basics: beers, tshirt, koozie, poster, and all the trimmings; you can't do the race unless you meet this deadline, which is Monday, May 11, 2015 after lunch - 1:30PM CST.
You won't be able to buy 2015 tshirts at the race.
VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION OPENS JANUARY 1. IT CLOSES MAY 11 (Monday) at 1:30PM CDT.
Thursday May 14, 2015: Packet pickup from 5-9pm at Le Bon Temps Roule; food trucks will be there the entire time so come hungry; beer specials; Bar-a-thoners pay no cover for Soul Rebels at 11PM. You will get your snazzy, exclusive BARATHON BIB NUMBER, TSHIRT and POSTER before the race.
Friday May 15, 2015: Packet pickup begins at 11AM at Le Bon Temps Roule; food trucks will be there for lunch (11AM-2PM) and dinner (7PM-11PM). Get your life-changing BARATHON BIB NUMBER, TSHIRT and POSTER before the race. The earlier, the better - once upon a time the lines were ridiculously long and nobody had fun with them. Avoid that.
Race begins at 6:05PM sharp! Make sure you have a full beer (we'll give you one) for the start.
Get your KOOZIE after the race at the finish line. Piano player in front bar starting at 7PM.
Oysters shucked at 7PM. Beer specials and food trucks.
Awards begin in the back bar at 8:30PM.
Watermelon sacrifice following awards.
New for 2015 - Bar-a-thon chooses band (stay tuned for details). Band plays after watermelon sacrifice.
Go home when you're no longer any fun.
i'm largely clueless; what's a bar-a-thon?
It's part of Uptown history. A footrace designed by the old Tchoupitoulas Social Aid & Athletic Club. Spanning 6 miles, visiting 6 bars, providing 6 beers. As serious as you want it to be.
1. LE BON TEMPS ROULE (4801 Magazine)
2. REGINELLI'S (741 State)
3. TJ QUILL'S (7600 Maple) - now called "the Annex"
4. PATOIS RESTAURANT (6078 Laurel)
5. DOS JEFES UPTOWN CIGAR BAR (5535 Tchoupitoulas)
6. GRIT'S BAR (530 Lyons)
Rules are few; visit the bars in this order. Each of them. Even Quill's, where your bib will be uniquely marked so our koozie enforcers at the finish line can give you your official FINISHER'S KOOZIE. We will be at the finish line with koozies for 2 hours 15 minutes, or until about 8:20PM. One pull tag, one koozie.
Awards are for everyone, not just the fast people. Show up in the back bar with a good attitude and you're likely to take away a custom-crafted metal creation from local artist LUIS COLMENARES.
PURPLE MONKEY DESIGNS will assist in a new look for the shirts this year. We're going back to the drawing board early on shirts because last year's didn't blow anyone away.
Last year, MAGWIRE created one of her famous circus banners for our event poster. In 2015, we want to keep onward and upward - the artist will be announced after Mardi Gras.
f.p.a. (frequently provided answers)
No, you won't be disqualified if you don't drink beer, and you're free to participate, but we simply don't have the resources to make you anything "heavily bruised" or "neat" or "up". Race has worked well with beer for more than three decades. No need to be cute.
Yes, we know what a "Social Aid" club was, historically. This is meant to be fun; no disrespect intended.
Yes, every year there are 1-2 charitable goals for the race, but really - it's okay to do something just for you every once in a while. Do you ask your local watering hole whether they donate a portion of the booze money you spend for some greater good?
No, there won't be any day-of-race registration. However, after online registration closes, creative folks can submit their respective cases to firstname.lastname@example.org in writing for consideration.
Yes, you can pick someone else's number up for them, unless you look sketchy or under 21.
Stop calling Le Bon Temps Roule for answers. Their work is to sell a lot of alcohol and put on good, no-cover shows. They've been doing it for longer than the Bar-a-thon has been running.
If you want a good bloody at 10AM on race day, report to 4801 Magazine. For race information, email email@example.com or call 504-812-6388.
In order to purchase these tickets in installments, you'll need an Eventbrite account. Log in or sign up for a free account to continue.
