The West Elk Bicycle Classic

The final 25 mile 5000' climb over Kebler pass on dirt.

Join Western State Colorado University’s Director of Mountain Sports, Dave Wiens, Labor Day weekend for this 134-mile timed road tour with 9,300 ft. of climbing. The ride starts on Western’s campus in Gunnison and finishes in downtown Crested Butte, just 28 miles to the north via Highway 135.

However, the West Elk Bicycle Classic never touches 135 but chooses the scenic route: plying the shores of Blue Mesa Reservoir; brushing the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; and visiting off-the-beaten-path communities like Crawford, Paonia and Somerset, before finally depositing riders on dirt and gravel for the final and biggest climb of the ride up an over Kebler Pass, the backdoor entrance into Crested Butte. All proceeds from the West Elk Bicycle Classic benefit the Mountain Sports program at Western, as well as the communities we visit along this amazing route.

Can I contact the event organizer?

Yes, anytime. Please email us at info@westelkbicycleclassic or call (970) 318-6783

Is my registration transferrable?

You may transfer your registration to a friend or stranger for a $25 transfer fee. You will be responsible for getting paid by the new entrant. The new entrant will pay the $25 transfer fee to the West Elk Bicycle Classic.

What is the refund policy?

There are no refunds. This is a backcountry road ride of sorts as there are long stretches of lonely nothingness. Also, very little in the way of cell service and help may be a whle in arriving in the event of a mechanical, injury or illness, especially as the ride spreads out.  Elk bicycle Classic is a rain or shine event.
