2014 Taste of Gullah Banquet

The Real” Taste of Gullah Banquet:Provides guests with an up close experience and personal exposure to the Gullah Geechee people’s culture and traditions. Five of our Low country’s finest chefs will provide an assortment of traditional Gullah Geechee cuisine dishes for guests to enjoy throughout the evening. Entertainment will be provided by local gospel groups, Saxophonist, Devon Gary and the Secret Jazz Band. Guests will be treated to a unique fashion show featuring sweetgrass hats and purses made by local basket makers. Sweetgrass baskets and art works by renowned local artist, Jonathan Green will be featured in a silent auction. The “Passing on the Tradition” Ceremony, will be narrated by Jonathan Green who will focus on the Gullah Geechee people’s long held tradition, of the elder basket makers passing on their sweetgrass basket making art form to the next generation. Students from Sanders Clyde Elementary School will perform the African “Rice Fanner” Dance. The Honorable Congressman, James Clyburn has been invited to help celebrate the Sweetgrass Festival 10th anniversary on Friday, June 6th from 6-9 pm. “The Real” Taste of Gullah Banquet will be held at the Town of Mt. Pleasant’s Waterfront Park, Cooper River Room.

Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association (SCAFA)
Formed in 2004, the SCAFA is a non-profit organizarion, whose mission is to protect and preserve the Gullah Geechee people's history, culture and their "ancient" sweetgrass basket making art form.
