DeGarmo Memorial

Rodger DeGarmo was involved in many aspects of weightlifting and strength coaching, having lifted and competed in meets in high school and throughout his adult years, along with coaching numerous weightlifters and college athletes. Rodger had a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training along with a Masters degree in Education Administration. He worked as an Athletic Trainer for Queen City Sports Medicine in Cincinnati, OH in 1992 and then became the Men's Basketball Strength & Conditioning coach at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

In 1996, Rodger went to work at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach responsible for track and field along with basketball and wrestling. In 2005, Rodger was offered a position as Director of High Performance and Coaching for USA Weightlifting, staffed at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. In March of 2007, he became Executive Director for USA Weightlifting. Along the way he held certifications for coaching including USA Weightlifting Senior International Coach, and coached a number of weightlifters to various levels of success. Throughout the years he made an impact at the local level in Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska, and Colorado as an athlete, a coach, and a meet director and organizer.

As a lifter he was coached by a number of top notch coaches whom he also counted among friends including Don Typer, Roger Neilsen, and Mike Gattone. He competed in the American Open and Nationals as well as countless state and local meets and state games. As a coach he developed lifters to be dedicated, technical, and to reach their potential; always encouraging them and helping them find their inner strength as it pertained to lifting and to life.

On a local level early in his career and then on a national level as high performance director and then executive director Rodger pushed for the growth of the sport of weightlifting, always on the lookout for young new talent and for ways to broaden both the fan base and the number of lifters. He had a passion for weightlifting and for the athletes, coaches and volunteers involved in the organization. Rodger was a technician in the sport, always striving for his personal best and expecting it from those he coached, educated, and mentored. Weightlifting helped define Rodger and gave him a lifelong passion for the sport. He would be honored by this memorial meet and honored by the memories of him that people in the organization carry on.
