Jacksonville[1] is situated on the Atlantic coast of northeast Florida.  It has the misleading distinction of being the most populous city in the state as measured by the number of residents within the city limits which comprises all of Duval county, but it is in fact the largest city in area in the continental United States.  The metropolitan area extends beyond Duval County into Nassau, St. Johns, Baker and Clay counties and has a population of more than 1.25 million people, easily exceeded by Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando.

Jacksonville is a traditionally hard-working, blue-collar city. It has a gorgeous downtown spanning the St. Johns River and two river walks.

By plane

  • Jacksonville International Airport (IATA: JAX) [2]. Jacksonville International Airport is the First Coast's commercial airport, with scheduled service offered by AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, jetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways. The airport is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown.

The airport has one terminal building, with ticketing on the upper "Departures" level and baggage claim and ground transportation on the lower "Arrivals" level.  There are two areas for ground transportation, at the center front for taxis and area hotel shuttles, and at the north end (outside of Baggage Carousel 1) for Pre-Arranged Ground Transportation, including limousines, intercity buses/shuttles, and local JTA city buses.  Airline gates radiate from three concourses, A, B, and C which all funnel through one central security screening area. Generally arriving one hour before a flight's scheduled departure is plenty of time, but during major holidays, such as Thanksgiving, allow one and a half to two hours.

Public transit from JAX to Downtown Jacksonville is provided by JTA Route CT-3[3], every hour, picking up at Pre-Arranged Ground Transportation (north end of the terminal outside Baggage Carousel 1, lower level). $1.

By train

Amtrak [5] provides service to other Florida destinations such as Orlando and Miami , but also connects to other points as far north as New York via the Silver Star and Silver Meteor lines. The station is located approximately 5 miles northwest of downtown Jacksonville at 3570 Clifford Lane.

By car

Jacksonville is the eastern terminus of Interstate 10 and is located on Interstate 95, halfway between Atlanta and Miami.

  • From Daytona Beach, it is a 1 1/2 hour drive.
  • From Orlando, it is a 2 hour drive.
  • From Gainesville, it is a 1 hour, 20 minute drive.
  • From Tallahassee, it is a 2 1/2 hour drive.
  • From Tampa-Saint Petersburg, it is a 3 1/2 hour drive.
  • From Fort Myers, it is a 5 hour drive.
  • From Sarasota, it is a 4 hour drive.
  • From Melbourne, it is a 2 1/2 hour drive.
  • From West Palm Beach, it is a 4 hour drive.
  • From Fort Lauderdale, it is a 4 hour, 45 minute drive.
  • From Miami, it is a 5 hour drive.
  • From Key West, it is an 8 hour drive.
  • From Key Largo, it is a 6 hour drive.
  • From Pensacola, it is a 5 hour drive.
  • From Mobile, it is a 6 hour drive.
  • From Brunswick, it is a 1 hour drive.
  • From Savannah, it is a 2 hour drive.
  • From Macon, it is a 4 hour drive.
  • From Augusta, it is a 4 hour drive.
  • From Atlanta, it is a 5 1/2 hour drive.

**Final mass communication before family reunion activities begin**

April 4, 2014

Hello family members!

Greetings to all of you who are committed to attending the 2014 Griffin Family Reunion in Jacksonville, Florida this summer. Most of you know the host hotel is the Hyatt Regency in downtown Jacksonville, with the beginning rate of $139/day for up to quad (4) occupancy. The reservation number is 904-588-1234. Just ask for the 2014 Griffin Family Reunion. You must call between the hours of 8 am and 5pm if cannot reserve via the internet at our family reunion event website: http://2014griffinfamilyreunion.eventbrite.com

The theme for this year’s reunion is “back to our roots”. We thought it is appropriate since we are in Jacksonville, Florida close to the oldest founded city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida bringing us back to our roots. Also, this reunion is bringing us back to our family heritage as outstanding educators. There is very rich, early educational heritage in this area with two HBCU institutions being Edward Waters College here in Jacksonville and Bethune-Cookman in Daytona.

Upon arrival on Thursday, July 3, check-in will begin around 3pm in the hospitality suite. Information will be disseminated at that time regarding the various activities for Friday and Saturday. Thursday evening will be an ‘on your own’ evening. There is plenty to do in downtown Jacksonville on a holiday weekend.

Friday, we have reserved two pavilions at the Hannah Park on the Atlantic Ocean from 10am-5pm. The pavilions include grills, benches, roofing, and the ocean 100 meters away. There are clean, indoor restrooms in close proximity. Also within walking distance is a park that includes paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, volley ball, and a water park. Food and drink will be provided all day. We will be hosting family members with our chef’s hats on during the festivities. Bring your bathing suits, towels, sunblock, or whatever you choose to wear. Transportation will be provided. After returning to the hotel and resting for a bit, we will gather atop the Hyatt to watch the 4th of July fireworks.

We will hold the Family Meeting, Saturday morning at 9 a.m. after breakfast. Saturday, various venues will also be available for different tastes. There will be a trolley ride at an additional cost that includes stops, pictures, and shopping at all historical landmarks in historical St. Augustine, Florida. Those not wishing to ride the trolley, may stay near the hotel and enjoy different settings around the hotel including water taxis, museums, shopping, eating, or relaxing. Special note for Saturday, the reunion banquet will convene at 7pm at the Jacksonville zoo and botanical garden. Leisurely attire is fine. The reunion will be hosted by expert zoo personnel in the range of the jaguar area, which includes the lost temple rivers edge and emerald forest aviary where animals may still be observed. Please note, we are the only family in the zoo at this time and children must be accompanied by an adult (over 18) or parent.

If there are any that would like to go to the zoo during the day, please let us know so we can get group pricing for you to do so. Transportation is provided to the banquet only located at the zoo.

**family picnic, banquet, transportation to all venues and gift bags are included in price of reunion. **

Sunday service will be available for our family at the Potter’s House International Ministry, located at 5119 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, Fl 32205 for those who have their own transportation.

Transportation will be provided by the Griffin Family Reunion committee

The church phone number is: 904.695.0181

We hope this provides clear communication of reunion schedule and events. All monies are due by May 15, 2014 due to final counts for banquet and other payment deadlines.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in July.

**if there are any photos of the original griffin apples, please submit them via email or postal mail. They are needed for the banquet. And don’t forget to send updated address, phone numbers, and email for our family address book. In case of inclement weather, other venues are planned. **

Please send to all family members who may have not received this correspondence.

We look forward to seeing you this summer
