The Academy Graduation is an opportunity to be inspired by this year’s graduates as they reflect on their transformative experience and share their vision for leadership as they embark on new journeys. Cocktail reception, dancing and fun to follow.
We are honored to have Carla Peterman as our distinguished keynote speaker. Carla J. Peterman is the California Public Utilities Commission’s assigned Commissioner for the Renewable Portfolio Standard, alternative transportation and energy storage proceedings. Commissioner Peterman’s previous positions include: California Energy Commissioner, researcher at the University of California Energy Institute and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and investment banking associate at Lehman Brothers.
We are proud to honor the following graduates:
Distinguished Alumnus - Sam Kang
Greenlining will also be honoring Sam Kang (Associate 2005) as a distinguished alumnus, who for over 9 years, has been an important member of the Greenlining team. Sam Kang is Greenlining’s former General Counsel, having served from 2010-2014. As the organization’s chief attorney, he provided Greenlining’s strategic direction when engaging powerful adversaries. In 2011, Sam led a successful national campaign to block the biggest telecom merger in U.S. history. He’s also written and passed legislation impacting smallbusinesses, the green economy, and education. Sam regularly authored one of Greenlining’s most heralded reports, the annual Supplier Diversity Report Card, which grades the supplier diversity efforts of California’s largest utilities. While it's bittersweet to see him leave, we know that he's moving on to bigger things, and that his service and commitment to our communities will be stronger than ever.
When & Where
The Greenlining Institute
The Greenlining Institute works to bring the American Dream within reach of all, regardless of race or income. In a nation where people of color will make up the majority of our population by 2043, we believe that America will prosper only if communities of color prosper.
Founded in 1993, The Greenlining Institute is a policy, research, organizing, and leadership institute working for racial and economic justice. We work on a variety of major policy issues, from the economy to environmental policy, civic engagement and many others, because we recognize that economic opportunity doesn’t operate in a vacuum. We don’t see these issues as being in separate silos, but as interconnected threads in a web of opportunity.
Headquartered in California, Greenlining’s approach focuses on bringing grassroots community leaders face to face with leading public and private sector leaders. We design and support policies designed to open doors to opportunity. We don’t see these interactions as a zero-sum game in which one side must win and the other must lose. Instead, we reach for win-win solutions that expand the size of the pie for all Americans.
Our Leadership Academy trains the leaders of the future to be effective advocates for justice and fairness. Through its programs, the Academy has trained and empowered over 800 young leaders since 1996.
Driving everything we do is a vision of equity in which the American Dream is truly within reach of all. The majority of babies born in the U.S. today are of color. The number of new businesses owned by people of color is growing at three times the rate of white-owned businesses. For our nation to succeed, communities of color will have to succeed, and we are determined to make it happen.
