Event Details

The 2014 EMS Patient Safety Conference is expected to be bigger and better than previous years, bringing national EMS experts together to share strategies to improve patient safety, highlight successful practices and provide broad networking opportunities to share successes and challenges. 

Highlights of the conference include Tom Judge, Executive Director of Lifeflight of Maine, discussing safety culture and management of risk; Michael Bachman from Wake County EMS in Raleigh, NC will discuss the coordination of patient safety in mobile integrated healthcare; David Williams from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Faculty, will present the Improvement Model for Impact in EMS; and much, much more!

Plan-Do-Study-Act – presented by David Williams, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Faculty, Using the Improvement Model for Impact in EMS

BIO: DAVID WILLIAMS, PHD

Dr. Williams started his career in ambulance service in 1990 and served as a paramedic in cities across America. For the last 13 years, he has acted as an internal and external improvement advisor and expert EMS systems consultant to governmental agencies, hospitals, and for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. He works with clients to improve their organizational systems by defining clear aims, using objective data and evidence-based practices, and designing processes that involve engagement of stakeholders to co-create patient centered service delivery systems. Quality as a business strategy is an essential foundation.

 

Dr. Williams is on the faculty of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and is an IHI improvement advisor able to support teams through leading systemic improvement. He has advised large healthcare system programs and multi-hospital improvement collaboratives in the U.S. and Europe. He is a member of the 2013 Leadership Austin Essential Class and is on the board of CommUnityCare, the Federally Qualified Health Center system serving the City of Austin, Texas. Dr. Williams taught undergraduate courses in emergency services at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences EMS Management program and at the St. Edward’s University Public Safety Management program. He has published nearly 100 articles – including the JEMS 200-City and Salary Surveys (2004-2010), coauthored a report on EMS for the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), and contributed to two EMS textbooks. He is also a frequent speaker and advisor on EMS improvement in the U.S.,
Canada, and Europe. Dr. Williams is one of only a few researchers to study EMS system design. His published doctoral research focused on patient-centric EMS system design.
Dr. Williams is known for leading objective, ethical, evidence-based, and collegial  processes that focus on the needs of the patient and the community and incorporate evidence-based and best practice methods.

BIO: THOMAS JUDGE

Thomas Judge, a practicing paramedic, serves as the Executive Director of LifeFlight of Maine and the LifeFlight Foundation. With an extensive background in pre-hospital emergency medical services and air medicine he has served as a subject matter expert for the IOM, GAO, NTSB, the State of Maryland, and is a current member of the Federal National EMS Advisory Council. Thomas has been recognized with multiple national leadership awards and has published numerous articles on EMS and critical care transport and has served as faculty for numerous national and international meetings as well as helping lead one of the work groups of the International Helicopter Safety Team. He is the immediate past chair of the Association of Critical Care Transport, and former president of the Association of Air Medical Services.

Former Board Chair of Maine EMS, the State Regulatory and Licensing Agency, Judge has worked extensively in both the public and non-government sectors and has a wide background in the design and implementation of emergency medical care systems.  He has worked extensively in the international arena including projects and presentations in Canada, Europe, and Africa as well as serving as an Atlantic Fellow in Public Policy working with the NHS in the UK.  He is an active professional member of the National Association of EMS Physicians, a faculty member of the National Medical Directors Course and Practicum, a founder ambulance member of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and served as Fellow at the at the Medical Care Research Unit, at the University of Sheffield.  He is particularly interested in patient safety, risk, governance, and the effects of health care policy and in the issues of access and equity in the provision of rural medical care.


Coordination of Patient Safety in Mobile Integrated Healthcare, presented by Michael Bachman, Wake County EMS, Raleigh, NC

BIO: MICHAEL BACHMAN

Michael Bachman is Chief Clinical Officer for the Wake EMS system. He has been a paramedic for more than 18 years, serving in multiple roles including field training, field supervision and education. He holds a Master’s Degree in EMS from Western Carolina University and has published and presented articles on pre-hospital medicine at several national conferences over the past several years.
