Lee Shumow received her doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1995. She examines relationships between educational adjustment and aspects of parenting (especially parental school involvement), neighborhood/ community characteristics, and time use (especially homework, after school activities, reading, and community service).

Mathematical Glass Ceiling: Developmental Education
With approximately 60% of all students entering Higher Education requiring some sort of remediation in Mathematics, many institutions have/are redesigning their Dev. Ed. Math sequences to cater to student intent. These Institutions are introducing Dev. Ed. students early to specific math skills necessary for success within their fields of study.
As “we” develop these alternatives to the traditional Algebra heavy sequence, are we somehow turning students away from STEM concentrations by limiting students’ access to mathematics based on our preconceived notions of their abilities and interests? Or are “we” truly tailoring our curriculum to better meet the needs/interests of our current students?
This talk will look at the structure of the Mathematics Developmental Education curriculum, trends, practices and issues. It will also discuss preconceived notions of what Developmental Mathematics Students are capable of, given various identifiers: class, gender, ethnic background, socio-emotional issues, etc.

Center for Promoting STEM
With a significant grant from the National Science Foundation, Oakton's Center for Promoting STEM (CP-STEM) offers diverse activities including a summer "bridge" program; peer tutor training; student-industry-teacher simulations; study sessions; seminars; and field trips. The New York Times recently cited Oakton among the top-ten community colleges in the nation and called attention to CP-STEM. In addition, the Peer Tutor Training and Student-Industry-Teacher Simulations programs captured the Innovation Award from the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators in 2003 and 2005 respectively.
