2013 - TUCSON GLASS FESTIVAL – STEAM OFF!

April 13 and 14, 2013 9am-4pm
Reception: April 20th 5-8pm

Presented by: Philabaum Glass Gallery & Studio and Sonoran Glass School

This year's Tucson Glass Festival will feature a STEAM Off competition judged by renowned UA Scientist J. Roger Angel, Ph.D.  STEAM is a new education emphasis founded in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

Regional and local glassblowers and torch workers will converge at Philabaum Glass Gallery & Studio (PGGS) and Sonoran Glass School (SGS) for a weekend of creating glass art and include fundamentals of STEAM in the creation of the art pieces.  Participating artists will provide a drawing and other illustrative materials of what they intend to create that will incorporate as many STEAM elements as possible.  This will include the size, form, color, accents and creation steps as they will then take molten glass and manipulate it into the works of art, craft or functional art and craft.

The demonstrations will take place on Saturday and Sunday with scheduled times at  PGGS and SGS starting at 9 a.m. on both days of the competition.  Other informational materials relating to STEAM will be on display at both studios, these topics will be informative and cover a variety of subjects such as annealing glass, glass color composition, glass furnace design and construction.

The STEAM off artist pieces will then be put on display in a special opening reception to be held at Philabaum Glass Gallery, Saturday, April 20 from 5 p.m.  to 8 p.m. where many of the featured artists will be on hand to meet and greet folks as the competition first through third cash prizes are awarded.  Much of the proceeds of the event will go to the SGS youth development program.
