6:30-8:00pm Talk, video, demonstration
Join members of Rogue Artists Ensemble, the 2013 Beach House Theater Company in Residence, as they share a sneak peek of their newest work HYPERBOLE: bard (premiering at the Beach House mid-July). Meet members of the cast and artistic team, learn about how their masks are made and experience what it's like to perform in a mask. Historical context of mask performance and video of past Rogue projects will be featured in this mixture of lecture/demo and master class with the artists. For adults and mature youth.
HYPERBOLE: bard is an original, family-friendly performance created by Rogue Artists Ensemble that recreates a collection of William Shakespeare’s most famous scenes through clowning, masked movement, puppets, and original music. Full of wonder and whimsy, HYPERBOLE: bard will be an incredible outdoors experience hosted by a masked character of the Bard himself.
Rogue Artists Ensemble is in residence at the Beach House from June 3 - July 19, 2013. The Ensemble is a collective of multi-disciplinary artists who create Hyper-theater, an innovative hybrid of theater traditions, puppetry, mask work, dance, music, and modern technology. Through a collaborative development process, with an emphasis on design and storytelling, the Rogues create original, thought-provoking performances, and cultivate unique audience experiences that appeal to multiple generations of theatergoers in order to expand the boundaries of contemporary American theater.
Their other public events include various rehearsals onsite (for updates check their blog at beachhouseair.blogspot.com), a mask making workshop for youth and adults Saturday July 6, 4pm, a final dress rehearsal July 9, and their run of performances July 10-12 & 17-19.
In celebration of Marion Davies’ support of artists, and to further the work of artists in all disciplines, the City of Santa Monica created the Annenberg Community Beach House Artist Residency program. Several times a year a local artist works out of an office at the Marion Davies Guest House, sharing their progress with the public both in person and online.
