2013 Run for Freedom 5K, 10K and Poker Walk
Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 9:00 AM (CDT)
Warrensburg, United States
Normally held the first Saturday in October, this year's Run for Freedom 5K, 10K and Poker Walk, will be held on September 28.
This USATF certified event offers professional timing services, medals for runners in 12 different age categories, cash prizes for overall winners, great door prizes and refreshments. New this year, the first 50 entrants will be automatically entered in a drawing to win $100 cash. The popular “Dollar Dash” raffle where a $1 ticket buys a chance to win $500 cash will also continue this year.
The courses begin and end at the Home, and children and families are invited to participate in the Poker Walk.
Volunteers help the Home’s Veterans participate in the walk by pushing wheelchairs. Prizes are awarded for runners in twelve different age and gender categories, as well as for winning hands in the Poker Walk. The event includes door prizes and refreshments. In 2012, the event raised $15,000 which was used to to replace the aging industrial ice cream machine in the Canteen. The Home's 200 Veteran Heroes consider year-round free soft serve ice cream one of their most beloved creature comforts.
Registration must be completed by Sept. 19 at midnight in order to guarantee a t-shirt. All online registration ends Sept. 26. Day-of registration is welcome at the event; however a t-shirt is not guaranteed. Pre-registered entrants may pick up race and Poker Walk bags the day before the event at the Home's reception desk, or on Event Day in the Chapel.
