Share 2013 Rake Across DeKalb Registration

Event Details


Rake Across DeKalb sends volunteers from the NIU community (students, faculty, and staff) into the community to assist elderly and disabled area residents with lawn clean-up in preparation for winter. Participation is free for both volunteers and those residents wishing to add to our list of project sites.

Student Volunteers:

TEAM LEADERS MUST REGISTER THEMSELVES AND THEIR TEAM NAME BEFORE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GROUP CAN SIGN-UP FOR THE EVENT. Volunteers may register as individuals or in teams of 5 or less. Larger student organizations looking to get involved are required to register multiple volunteer teams.

Volunteers will receive their assignments as well as any supplies they might need during check-in on October 26th, 2013. Check-in will occur in the Douglas Hall lobby from 9:00-9:30 am. A state-issued ID (ie. driver's license) will be needed from the Team Leader in order for the team to receive their supplies. Supplies can be dropped off back at Douglas Hall following the event. All team members must bring their OneCard to check-in.


Are there ID requirements to enter the event?

Volunteers must present a valid NIU OneCard at check-in. Team Leaders must present a state-issued ID card in order for a team to recieve their materials (rakes, gloves, etc.).

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Volunteers ares strongly encouraged to drive to their project site on their own with their Team or walk. *There will be no transportation provided by SILD, seeing as many of the residents volunteers will be assisting will be within walking distance. We strongly suggest that you provide your own transportation if you are able. 

What can/can't I bring to the event?

  • You will get dirty. Please plan your clothes and shoes accordingly. Work gloves will be provided if you're really worried about getting your hands dirty!
  • Be sure to check the forecast ahead of time and dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Don't bring anything that you won't want to lug around all day. This includes purses, backpacks, etc.
  • Take pictures! Rake Across DeKalb can be a great opportunity to capture some great NIU memories.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

No. You must register online during the registration period. There will be no on-site registration. If you are unable to volunteer after you have registered, please update this information in the 'My Tickets' section of your Eventbrite account. 

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes. Please bring your printed ticket to check-in or download the EventBrite mobile app and present your ticket on your smartphone during check-in.

Through service, students not only enrich their community, but also gain hands-on experience in various work fields, build relationships with their peers, and learn valuable networking skills.

The Department of Student Involvement & Leadership Development firmly believes in the value of service to one's community and has thus incorporated community service as a component of the Department's focus.
