“Best Practices for Social Skills Development Throughout the Whole Year;What Role Can Parents Play?”
Dr. Rory Panter Psy.D. (Behavior Therapy Associates)
Often, children with disabilities have difficulty with social skills; they have a hard time making and keeping friends, engaging in conversations, and navigating the less structured worlds of the lunch room and the playground. These deficits are especially pronounced in children with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD, AD/HD, non-verbal learning disability, anxiety, and/or Learning Disabilities. Like other skills, social skills can be learned. This workshop will help parents to understand how social skills can be taught to children across the age span and what their role can be in promoting these skills for their children. Information will be shared on “best practices’ for social skills development and how the summer months can be used to teach and maintain social skills.

Frank M DeLucca Arc of New Jersey, Assistant Director/Project HIRE will offer a workshop on:
- transition planning
- guidelines and checklists for parents
- available resources for a seamless transition
Mr. Barger concentrates his practice on representing families in disputes involving New Jersey public school districts, with a focus on special education litigation, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ("IDEA"), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and civil rights compliance. Mr. Barger has appeared in the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law, New Jersey Superior Court, Federal District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. After graduating from law school, Mr. Barger spent five years in Illinois where he handled complex litigation and appeals. He has used his litigation experience to assist families in their disputes with school districts. Mr. Barger makes frequent presentations to statewide organizations and to parent groups, where he discusses issues arising under the IDEA and Section 504
Claudia Sommerer is currently the Director of the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department of the Johnson Rehabilitation Institute within the JFK Medical Center. She has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for over 25 years and has worked with children from birth through 18 years of age in a variety of settings such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal High Risk Clinic, Early Intervention Program, schools and pediatric inpatients and outpatients. In 2003, Claudia was invited to be a member of the New Jersey State Department of Education Task Force reviewing criteria for preschool eligibility. She has been an active member of ASHA and the New Jersey Speech and Hearing Association since 1987 serving on various committees and as Co-Chairperson for the DOSPAC Committee. She has also been involved with the Overseas Association for Communication Sciences serving as Co-Chairperson of the Continuing Education Committee. Claudia is a guest lecturer for the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences at Kean University and the Infant Specialist Certification Program at Rutgers University.
Ellen Kurtz, MEd,LRC,CRC is a Clinical Supervisor in the Vocational Rehabilitation Department at JFK-Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. Ms Kurtz graduated from American University and Teachers College, Columbia University, with masters degrees in psychological counseling and vocational rehabilitation counseling. She has worked in a sheltered workshop and training center and a supported employment community based program prior to her employment at JRI.
Rory A. Panter, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey. Dr. Panter received an undergraduate Honors Degree in Psychology from Rutgers College where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Panter earned her doctorate in clinical psychology, with a specialization in child and family issues, at the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Washington D.C. Campus. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Andrus Children’s Center (formerly the Center for Preventive Psychiatry) in New York. Dr. Panter has extensive experience providing therapy and evaluation/testing services to children and adolescents and their families, including individuals with a wide range of diagnoses. She has worked in a variety of settings, including schools, specialty outpatient clinics, community mental health clinics, inpatient hospitals, and specialized summer programs. Dr. Panter has a special interest in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, anxiety disorders, and training parents on behavior management strategies to improve child behavior. Dr. Panter conducts social skills training groupsand behavioral parent training groups throughout the year and also provides individual and family therapy for individuals of all ages. She provides behavioral consultation to professionals in various school districts and conducts Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans. Dr. Panter conducts Psychoeducational and Psychological Evaluations, which are aimed at determining a child’s strengths and needs, diagnosis, and the appropriateness of a child’s current programming at school and in the home. She presents workshops for parents and professionals on a variety of topics, including the topics listed above. Dr. Panter has also been the Program Director of the North New Jersey Campus of HI-STEP®
Frank DeLucca- Assistant Director for The Arc of New Jersey/Project HIRE. Has been with The Arc of NJ for the past 23 years. He oversees Project HIRE, the state’s oldest and largest publicly funded Supported Employment program. In his capacity as AD he also oversees the program's Transition Services component, which serves students in high school in school-to-work and transition planning.
