2013 PRO Annual Educational Conference

Join us as for an action packed educational experience. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from dynamic speakers with expertise in a variety of topics that are of great interest to people living with Parkinson's. The conference also features question and answer sessions and a chance to network with people from across the region and beyond to share information.  

 

Friday, April 12th

Support group facilitator Training (If you are a facilitator, please call PRO for details and to register!) 

7:00 - 9:00 pm Conference Social and Packet Pickup open to all attendees.

This year we're mixing it up: Instead of dinner we will be holding a fun social hour open to everyone who attends the conference.  We will have a special breakout room for caregivers and our Social Worker Sally Stevens, LCSW, available to facilitate some casual discussion and answer questions. Light snacks and no-host bar will be provided.  Please RSVP on your registration if you're able to join us for some pre-conference fun!

Power of the Mind, Enhancing the Mind-Body Connection to Improve PD Outcomes

Dr. Monique Giroux, Movement & Neuroperformance Center of Colorado, PD, Englewood, Colorado.

Learn how your mind can influence how you feel, your Parkinson's symptoms, and response to medication.  Tap into the power of the mind to perform and feel better with Parkinson's disease.

     a) Facing Fears: Strategies for Coping with PD Anxiety, John S Allen, PhD, Health Psychologist and Wellness Consultant Specializing in PD

     b) Tools for Managing Caregiver Stress, Leslie Congleton, BA, and Kathy Shannon, MA with Powerful Tools for Caregivers

     c) Overview for Newly Diagnosed with Q and A, Sara Batya, MD, Movement Disorder Specialist, and Leah Jeske, LCSW, Program Coordinator with Parkinson's Resources of Oregon

Lunch Keynote: Towards a cure for Parkinson's Disease - Therapeutic Potential of Adenosine

Detlev Boison, PhD, Director of Basic and Translational Research with the Legacy Research Institute.

Learn about cutting edge research being done to explore the possible therapeutic effects of adenosine in Parkinson's disease.  This presentation will challenge conventional target-centric drug-treatment approaches and will outline why reconstruction of adenosine homeostatis may lead to a cure for PD.  Therapeutic interventions, such as the ketogenic diet will be discussed.

3:10 pm Parkinson's Q and A panel

4:00 pm. Formal adjourning of the conference

4:15 pm Optional Aware In Care workshop to receive a hospitalization preparedness kit.
