We want YOU to march in what is hands down, Hartford's weirdest parade, the Hooker Day Parade on Saturday, October 19 Any manner of marcher, costume, self-propelled float, musical instrument, boom box, roller skate, roller blade or skateboard is encouraged. You are encouraged to throw (and by throw we mean lightly toss, not hurl overhand) candy, beads, cups, Frisbees, t-shirts, Nerf products or Hula Hoops. Feel free to hand out postcards or brochures for your group or organization along the way. The weirder, the better.

WHAT TO MAKE & WHAT TO WEAR
Just in case you’re stumped and aren’t sure what we’re talking about, we’ve created a handy STYLE GUIDE on Pinterest to give you some inspiration, or a place to completely rip off your costume or float idea, right down to the pink flamingo.

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR COSTUME AND FLOAT BUILDING
We are hosting FREE workshops for parade participants. Materials, ideas AND art instruction will all be available to you for FREE. Surprise Downtown Hartford locations to be announced soon.
Thursday, October 3 – Happy Hour style
Sunday, October 13 – Family Fun style

RESTRICTIONS
Do not throw anything pokey or heavy. No baseballs, pens, lollipops (we do not want a David Bowie incident on our hands), metal objects or ripe bananas for obvious reasons.
No vehicles larger than a golf cart, unless you get specific permission from us way in advance. You know, like now.
Sadly, no doggies are allowed to march in the parade. We are planning to throw a ridiculous amount of candy during the parade and don’t want any accidents, either medical or poop related.

PARADE HISTORY
In October of 1635 Thomas Hooker left Cambridge, MA and traveled through the wilderness with The Adventurers in search of a new settlement for his congregation. They found this place, and in June of 1636 Hooker led a procession of one hundred men, women and children back to Hartford to settle here for good. You could say that march was the original Hooker Parade.

“Mayor Mike” Peters organized the first Hooker Day Parade in 1991 to bring some excitement and a little goofiness to Downtown Hartford. The parade grew over the next 10 years from a small, extremely wacky procession with more marchers than watchers, to a significant and highly anticipated event in the city of Hartford. The Hooker Day Parade went on hiatus in 2001, but remained in the hearts and memories of anyone who participated. The Hartford Business Improvement District and HARTFORD.COM brought the Parade back in 2008 to rave reviews. Every year we honor the memory of Mike Peters. He will forever be our Grand Marshall
