Event Details

The 14th Annual El Sol Blind Draw 4's Tourney is Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Key details for the day:

Check-in time for all players is 8:00am. All players must appear at their assigned playing location (Aussie's or Zilker) by 8:00 am to remain in the tournament. Players playing at Zilker do not need to go to Aussie's first.

Please remember to check this website, the Facebook event page, or the Aussie's website for playing locations on Friday, May 10 after 9pm.
Check-in as soon as you get to your playing site. If you fail to check-in on time, we will start moving up alternates to take your place.

At 8:00 am, Aussie's will be serving breakfast and beverages. Absolutely no outside food or beverages will be allowed.

There will be no breakfast or food service at Zilker.

With 2 courts at Aussie's and 5 courts at Zilker.

Once everyone gets back to Aussie's, the shrimp boil will be served. There will be new potatoes, corn, red beans & rice (all 3 will be vegetarian), and shrimp and possibly other fixin's.

If you are not playing on Saturday, please stop by sometime during the day and join the fun. There will be food, beverages, volleyball, and plenty of good times! Remember, heckling is a big part of the fun (and something Eric Solie truly loved to do).

$30 - to play in the tournament
$10 - to eat w/early bird offer (1st 150 people registered by noon, April 30 deadline)
$15 - to eat (after 150 people or noon, April 30 deadline)

Tournament registration is capped at 168 people. After that point, alternates will be put on the waitlist (no payment needed to be put on waitlist).

Alternates will be contacted by email as soon as a spot becomes available and will have 1 day to complete their registration, including payment, before the next alternate is contacted to take that spot. We will publish the waitlist periodically so that you have an idea where you are in the queue.

Please check your email regularly if you are put on the waitlist as you will only have the 1 day to enter the tournament before your spot is passed over. You will receive an email from invite@eventbrite.com that has a link so you can purchase your spot in the El Sol tournament. Last year, we had lots of email caught in spam filters so please make sure that your spam filter allows an email from that address to come through. You cannot register without the email. If you have any problems, please contact us as soon as possible.

PS: We will accept cancellations until Midnight CDT, Tuesday, May 7, 2013 and will issue a full refund of the registration fees paid. After that time, THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS ISSUED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Cancellations must be sent and confirmed by email!

The Eric Solie Foundation

Eric Solie (“El Sol”) was born September 6, 1968 in Tyler, Texas.  Eric came to the Austin volleyball scene in the late 1980s.  He played for the University of Texas indoor club team and was subsequently introduced to the Bailey Park outdoor group.  In 1989, Aussie's opened and Austin had a new place to play sand volleyball.  Eric loved the game of volleyball and while playing at Aussie's over the years became quite a good player.   He and his partner experienced a great deal of success at the “A” level over the next few years playing in tournaments all over the state.

In February of 1999, Eric tore his Achilles tendon playing indoor volleyball at Austin Rec Center.  The surgery went well but a couple weeks later, Eric died suddenly from a blood clot on March 3, 1999.  He was 30 years old and taken away from us far too early.  Eric was extremely friendly to everyone he met.  He could put a smile on your face just by being around him.  Those of us who knew him, still miss his smile, quick wit and gregarious nature.

The Eric Solie Foundation was created in 1999 in honor of Eric and his love for volleyball.  Since the creation of The Eric Solie Foundation, it has been funded by an Annual "El Sol" Blind Draw 4's Tournament held at Aussie's Volleybar & Grill, the semi-annual Gemini & Halloween Poker Rides & Raffles, donations from the Austin volleyball community and friends of Eric, and support from local businesses.  All proceeds raised from these sources go directly to The Eric Solie Foundation.  The Eric Solie Foundation has now reached a maintenance funding level that allows us to provide a selected junior volleyball player each year with a club volleyball scholarship.

For the past 6 years, the Foundation has provided over $1000 in scholarships in each year to local club volleyball players.  For the 2015 club volleyball year, The Eric Solie Foundation will provide a selected club volleyball player with a $1750 scholarship  The Eric Solie Foundation volleyball scholarship will be awarded based on the player’s financial need in combination with other factors to go to the player’s club dues.
