When & Where
The Eric Solie Foundation
Eric Solie (“El Sol”) was born September 6, 1968 in Tyler, Texas. Eric came to the Austin volleyball scene in the late 1980s. He played for the University of Texas indoor club team and was subsequently introduced to the Bailey Park outdoor group. In 1989, Aussie's opened and Austin had a new place to play sand volleyball. Eric loved the game of volleyball and while playing at Aussie's over the years became quite a good player. He and his partner experienced a great deal of success at the “A” level over the next few years playing in tournaments all over the state.
In February of 1999, Eric tore his Achilles tendon playing indoor volleyball at Austin Rec Center. The surgery went well but a couple weeks later, Eric died suddenly from a blood clot on March 3, 1999. He was 30 years old and taken away from us far too early. Eric was extremely friendly to everyone he met. He could put a smile on your face just by being around him. Those of us who knew him, still miss his smile, quick wit and gregarious nature.
The Eric Solie Foundation was created in 1999 in honor of Eric and his love for volleyball. Since the creation of The Eric Solie Foundation, it has been funded by an Annual "El Sol" Blind Draw 4's Tournament held at Aussie's Volleybar & Grill, the semi-annual Gemini & Halloween Poker Rides & Raffles, donations from the Austin volleyball community and friends of Eric, and support from local businesses. All proceeds raised from these sources go directly to The Eric Solie Foundation. The Eric Solie Foundation has now reached a maintenance funding level that allows us to provide a selected junior volleyball player each year with a club volleyball scholarship.
For the past 6 years, the Foundation has provided over $1000 in scholarships in each year to local club volleyball players. For the 2015 club volleyball year, The Eric Solie Foundation will provide a selected club volleyball player with a $1750 scholarship The Eric Solie Foundation volleyball scholarship will be awarded based on the player’s financial need in combination with other factors to go to the player’s club dues.
