Jeff Freeland Nelson - Founder + CEO, Play from Scratch
Jeff Freeland Nelson is a dad who quit his job leading public affairs for American Public Media, one of America’s largest public broadcasters, to start a toy company. In less than a year, Jeff has built Play from Scratch into a successful business that inspires creativity, imagination and wonder in children and adults through open-ended play with sustainable materials.
While at American Public Media, Jeff led the 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting campaign, a grassroots effort to protect funding for public broadcasting with more than 420 partner organizations and hundreds of thousands of advocates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Previously, Jeff was appointed director of cultural development for the City of Saint Paul and managing director of McNally Smith College. He was the founder and executive director of the Saint Paul Arts & Culture Partnership, a collaboration of 40 regional arts organizations.
Jeff was the recipient of the 2010 Catalytic Leader Award from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, is a former fellow of the Humphrey Institute Policy Forum and the German Marshall Fund and received a prestigious Leadership Fellowship from the Archibald Bush Foundation. Jeff was recently named one of the Twin Cities' most successful young professionals by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. He holds a bachelors degree from Hamline University and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University.
Jeff is married to writer and doula Alisa Blackwood and the father of two amazing kids. He is also a part-time carpenter, designer, electrician, musician, sculptor, painter and restorer of old barns.
Gary Caldwell - Social Media Coordinator, Minnesota Department of Health
Gary Caldwell has been with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) since 2002. In 2006 he joined the Communications team and quickly became involved in helping the department expand its Web presence and reach through social media.
Jenna Covey - Director of New Media, Governor Mark Dayton
Jenna's work focuses on creating compelling online and offline content using new technology and time proven strategy. She believes the best ideas happen offline, the best projects are powered by collaboration, and the nicest people live in Minnesota. Follow her on twitter @jenna_covey.
Luther Krueger - Crime Prevention Analyst, Minneapolis Police Department
Luther Krueger is a 17-year civilian veteran of the Minneapolis (Minnesota) Police Department. Krueger currently oversees the performance measurement of crime prevention partnership efforts throughout the City of Minneapolis. He is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and colleges throughout Minnesota, and he has been tapped by the Jamaican Constabulary for training in community policing policies. He has also testified before the Kazakhstan parliament regarding legislation to promote crime prevention. In his spare time Krueger writes plays and has had two of them produced, including the award-winning "America Fears" for the University of Minnesota 1983. Krueger is an accomplished solar cook and lives in the Lyndale Neighborhood of south Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, Johanna.
Scott Burns - CEO & co-Founder, GovDelivery
Scott Burns co-founded GovDelivery in a St. Paul basement and is the company's CEO. In 2006, Scott was recognized as one of five Emerging Leaders by Twin Cities Business Magazine and received the “Forty Under 40” recognition from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. In 2008, he was one of 25 people in the private sector to be named to Federal Computer Week's Federal 100, a list that recognizes individuals who significantly influence how federal government uses information technology. In 2011, Twin Cities Business Magazine named Scott one of “200 Minnesotans You Should Know”. Scott serves on the boards of the St. Paul Public Schools Foundation, the Friends of the St. Paul Libraries, the Executive Committee of the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce and loyalty marketing firm, Tecmark. Scott received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in economics and environmental studies where he skied for Dartmouth’s NCAA Division I alpine ski team. He was born and raised in Duluth.
Jeremy Greene - Director of Product Management, GovDelivery
As Director of Product Management, Jeremy leads the collaborative effort behind GovDelivery’s product strategy and execution, combining feedback from marketing, sales, development, and customers to set the strategic vision and lead the rollout of new products and features. Prior to joining the GovDelivery team, Jeremy spent time at SPS Commerce, Oracle and Accenture. Before embarking on a career in business, Jeremy spent time in the U.S. Navy. Jeremy received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from North Dakota State and his MBA from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.
