Event Details

Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago will celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth in its five day 2013 Collaborative Works Festival, held at venues throughout Chicago from September 11-15. Among those joining CAIC for its second annual Festival are the renowned countertenor David Daniels, legendary pianist Martin Katz, Grammy® Award winning mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, soprano Kiera Duffy, tenor Nicholas Phan, as well as members of the Grammy® Award winning new music ensemble, eighth blackbird.

The Festival’s opening concert, Poetic Muses: Britten, Auden and Sitwell, on Wednesday September 11 at the Poetry Foundation, is presented in partnership with The Poetry Foundation and The University of Chicago Presents and will focus on Britten’s rich relationships with the poets Edith Sitwell and W.H. Auden, both of whom had a profound impact on his artistry and life. This salon concert will feature performances of Britten’s settings of Auden’s poetry (On this Island and Cabaret Songs), as well as a complete performance The Heart of the Matter, designed as a showcase for Sitwell and her poetry at the 1956 Aldeburgh Festival.Featured performers in this opening concert are soprano Kiera Duffy, pianist and CAIC Executive Director Shannon McGinnis, and tenor and CAIC Artistic Director Nicholas Phan.

Countertenor David Daniels and pianist Martin Katz will inaugurate a new Collaborative Works Festival tradition, an annual solo vocal recital, at Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at the Harold Washington Library on Thursday, September 12. David Daniels will also preside over a Master Class on September 13.

The Festival’s closing concert, Music of the People: Britten & Folk Song, on September 15, will be held at the University of Chicago’s Logan Center Performance Penthouse and will explore the influence of folk songs on Britten’s work; the closing concert features Kiera Duffy, Nicholas Phan, Jennifer Johnson Cano, and members of the contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbird in performances of folk-song arrangements by Ludwig van Beethoven and Benjamin Britten, as well as Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs.
