2013 Brooklyn Inventgenuity Festival: Sunday Workshop Reservations
Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM (EST)
We're trying something new this year at the Inventgenuity Festival: you may reserve and pre-pay for a spot at one or more workshops. Sign-up for the workshops of your choice at the times of your choice. Sign-up will also be available at the Festival for workshops with remaining space. As always, there is no charge for participation in the Inventgenuity Project and assorted other activities.
When completing the ticket form, please be sure to include the name of the child that will attend each workshop for which you are reserving space. Workshops are for ages 7 and up.
Crazy Cursor Bots
Usually you tell the computer's cursor where to point. In Reid Bingham's workshop you'll build Cursors with minds of their own. You'll create a super-sized battery-powered bot that runs amok and skitters on hair-brush bristles.
What's the good of a smiley-face or a winky-face or a frowny-face when it's stuck on your little cellphone screen? In this workshop Etsy Craftwarrior Julie Schneider helps you proudly wear your emoticons on your sleeve or chest or backpack.
LED Fortune Teller
Ask the box a question, shake it up and the LEDs can tell your future. Is it magic or is it electricity? Inventgenuity kit-designer in residence, Eun Jung Park leads this workshop in which you'll create the DIY electronic version of the Magic 8 Ball.
Let's face it, Pixar and Dreamworks have taken the fun out of animation. Everything is so flawless that it might as well be live action. Mechanical Sculptor Brett Van Aalsburg's workshop puts the imperfection back in cartoons, with a handcranked contraption where you supply the drawings and the characters.
Origami LED Pixels
Pixels get physical in Susan Ngo's workshop. Kids will create origami pixelboxes lit by LEDs. Each pixel-ist will construct as many boxes as they can and then combine and recombine their creations into a collective pixelated masterpiece.
Beam Center is a not-for-profit organization helping young people shape their world and futures through the practices of physical creation and collaboration.
