1st Annual Sushi-thon 2013 Colon Cancer Fundraiser
Saturday, September 14, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Dear Friends and Family,
I believe that each and every one of us can make a difference in this world and that no good deed ever goes unnoticed. We make the world a better place by doing small things like helping people in need, donating to causes we believe in, spending time with people we love and never giving up hope.
This year was a difficult one for me and for many people I know. I lost two of my beautiful friends to colon cancer - Christine at 34 and Melissa at 30. Besides the shock, the pain, the tears, the anger…I felt helplessness and that feeling still lingers with me to this day. It’s hard to imagine that in this day and age of (almost) flying cars and virtual reality machines we still don’t have a cure for cancer. Cancer rates are rising exponentially, specifically colon cancer in young adults. It is no longer an “aging” disease, adults between the ages of 19-40 are largely affected and in most cases the disease goes undetected until it is too late. And still we have no answers, no cure.
It isn’t all doom and gloom though; thanks to private funding many organizations have launched research and development efforts that include using genomic DNA composition and nano robots to derive customized therapies that will target specific cancer cells. One of those organizations is the Wunderglo Foundation, founded by a colon cancer patient who is on her 54th round of chemo! Gloria has rounded up a team of 6 doctors from UCLA dedicated to finding a cure for colon cancer. Their slogan is “cancer your time is up!” and I couldn’t agree more. You can read more about this project at http://www.thewunderproject.org
I want to raise money for the Wunder Project by holding a fundraising event to honor those who have lost their battle to cancer, amongst them Christine and Melissa, and to support those who are still fighting it. We may not have a cure for cancer yet, but together we can help. We can act. We can donate. We can push cancer research in the right direction: the direction of finding a cure for cancer!

I wanted to thank my friend Peggy Haga who has relentlessly pushed me to get started on this and get the ball rolling and the wonderful social media guru, Jen Knoedl, who has walked me through every step of the way to make sure that this becomes a successful event. Also, the awesome sushi chef, Chef Samantha from ROKA, who has been instrumental in encouraging me through the entire planning process. Thank you for helping me organize this event. It means so much to me, words can never express; thank you for your time and efforts.
Now, let the party begin! Oh, and don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes – there will be music!
