In my 30 years of getting to know, work with, and learn from people with disabilities, I have seen again and again how important it is to have well-supported supporters. (Say that 3 times fast!) The right match matters. People in direct support roles and those who supervise them need to be heard and respected in their work environment - or else the quality of support declines. This is a conversation about staying person-centered while recognizing the gifts that paid supporters bring to their work, and how everyone benefits when we listen, collaborate and celebrate with each other. Add in a little humor and music, and by the end we hope you’ll feel this was time worth spending together.

10:45a.m. - 12:15p.m. - “7 Ways to Prevent a Crisis”
Many people labeled with “challenging behavior” spiral into crisis through actions and events that could have been avoided. Many crises are caused - unintentionally - by the system, the team or the behavior plan. When people are lonely and disconnected, when life is dull, when a “home” does not feel like home, when a place where someone spends the day is not a good match - the likelihood of unwanted behavior increases. This is not a session about techniques, but rather about how paying attention to quality of life relates to crisis prevention.

“Whose Life Is It, Anyway?” - Presented by Peter Leidy
This session looks at power, control, and decision-making in the lives of adults with disabilities. When a person is “placed” in a home she had no choice about, when a 51 year-old woman is told by her 24 year-old staff person that it is time for bed at 8:30 p.m., when “outings” are scheduled only twice a week for a very active young adult - we need to ask questions. Questions like: “Who is making the choice here?” “Who gets to decide?” “Whose life IS it anyway?”
"Self-Determination and Aging" - Presented by Tamar Heller
An important element of aging well is living a self-determined life. Yet many people with developmental disabilities have few opportunities for self-determination throughout their lives. With age there can also be greater opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and life experience. This presentation will provide examples of issues faced by these adults as they age and of ways to promote their self-determination through training and skill development, peer mentoring, provision of environmental supports, and changes in public policies.
“Sexual Violence & Women with Disabilities: Responding to Survivors with Disabilities”
Presented by Jennifer VanderPloeg and Jacqui Scott
Disability service agencies understand disabilities and how to work with women with disabilities to meet their various, individual needs. Yet agencies and workers may feel unprepared to respond to indicators of sexual violence or disclosures of sexual violence by the women they serve. Since women with disabilities experience sexual violence at a disproportionate rate, it is critical for their primary support workers to be prepared to respond effectively. This presentation will introduce participants to Sexual Violence statistics about people with disabilities, indicators of Sexual Violence, and how to respond to a disclosure of Sexual Violence in a trauma-informed, victim-centered way.
"Using Person-Centered Planning to Figure Out What's Important to People and How We Can Help Them to Achieve a Meaningful Life"

This session will focus on the critical role QIDP staff play in assuring that agency services and supports truly focus on and help people to achieve a meaningful quality of life. We’ll explore different tools used to facilitate person-centered planning including one based on CQL’s personal outcome measures; discuss the difference between a Person-Centered Plan and an Individual Support Plan; and review strategies for assuring involvement of individuals with disabilities, as well as staff, at all levels in developing and implementing a person-centered plan.
