Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat LIVE
Charanjit Singh's name started circulating on the internet in 2006, in the tone of whispered bewilderment that one might use to discuss a sighting of the Loch Ness monster or a UFO. Rumors spread of an acid house record from India, a collection of minimal, techno-speed electronic renditions of traditional Indian ragas--but it was the record's release date that left some listeners crying foul. Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat was purportedly recorded in 1982, a full three years before Phuture penned "Acid Tracks," generally acknowledged as the pioneering acid house track.
Now that Charanjit Singh, a Bollywood session musician, has surfaced, we can faithfully say that Ten Ragas is not an Aphex Twin-style hoax or a freak accident. Drew Daniel of Matmos correctly predicted that "[Ten Ragas] is ready to take a cosmic disco dance floor to a higher plane"--the record was rereleased in 2010 and was instantly established as a legendary piece of "antique futurism."
Now in his late 70s, Singh will be making his Brooklyn debut with all the original gear: a Jupiter-8 keyboard synth, Roland TB-303 bass synth, and a TR-808 drum machine.
