David Nelson and Jerry Garcia came up with the idea to start a fun offshoot of the Greatful Dead to highlight some of their influences from the more country side of things – Thus the legacy of the New Riders of the Purple Sage began. Jerry had to leave the band, and leave the steel duties to Buddy Cage – Some decades later David and Buddy along with the rest of the Riders, come together for a few special shows.
