Reach Out and Read Kansas City
Reach Out and Read Kansas City is the only medically-based early literacy nonprofit serving over 29,000 at risk children, birth-5, in Kansas City. With your support, ROR-KC will help these low income children gain access to books, literacy advice, and enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Reach Out and Read Kansas City started, in 1997, as a partnership between Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics and KU Pediatrics, and now partners with 50+ health care clinics throughout the metroplitan area. Using an extensive partner network of 500+ medical providers, 150+ volunteers, and advocates, like you, Reach Out and Read Kansas City is making a difference one book at a time. The ROR-KC program is simple but effective: children recieve a new book at each routinely scheduled well-child visit between birth and 5 years; doctors and nurses give trusted literacy advice to parents and caregivers on how to use books to develop early literacy skills; and volunteers fill clinic waiting rooms sharing books and telling stories to children while modeling read aloud techniques to parents.
