Turning Compassion into Action
The name Seva (say-va) is a Sanskrit word meaning "selfless service."
Seva is a Berkeley based non profit organization dedicated to restoring sight and preventing blindness around the world.
Seva was Founded in 1978 by a group of medical professionals, counterculture activists, musicians, and compassionate individuals, all dedicated to the prevention of blindness around the globe. Among Seva's founders are public health experts Dr. Larry & Girija Brilliant, spiritual leader Ram Dass, humanitarian activists Wavy Gravy & Jahanara Romney and Dr. Nichole Grasset, .
There are an astonishing 39 million people who live in darkness around the globe. 90% live in developing countries. Perhaps the most incredible statistic is that eight out of ten people who are blind could see again if they simply had access to an eye doctor. Since 1978, Seva's Sight Programs have helped nearly 4 million people to see again!
Seva brings high quality, high volume eye care services to those in greatest need: the poor, women, children, indigenous communities, and those living in rural and isolated areas. With 39 million people who are blind, and 285 million suffering with low-vision - Seva's support is crucial. Through mobile eye camps and outreach services, Seva's programs ensure that those in marginalized communities are able to access the care they need.
