Sleepless nights. Cold sweats. Mile-long to-do lists. Bottomless cups of coffee. Sound like the days leading up to an event? You’re not alone. Last year CareerCast published a list of the Most Stressful Jobs of 2012 and (surprise!) event coordinators came in at number six. Other notable professions on the list? Police officer, military general, airline pilot, firefighter.
1. Sweat. This is a no-brainer. Unless you’ve been living under a rock your whole life, you already know that getting yo’ sweat on makes you happy (thanks, endorphins!) and boosts your energy. Don’t believe us? Read this post from the good people at the Mayo Clinic. We know you have a lot to do, but if you can squeeze in 30 minutes of exercise, we promise you’ll be more productive!
2. Sleep. Remember what happened when you pulled an all-nighter in college and you felt like junk the next day? Nobody has time for that. Act like the educated adult that you are and get the amount of sleep you need. Every night. Just like exercise, the benefits of a good night’s sleep are endless. Making time for Zzzzz’s will result in better memory, will sharpen your attention span, lower stress, help you avoid accidents and some even say it helps you live longer.
3. Take a walk. Leave your phone inside and take a few laps around the block. Taking a few minutes to get some fresh air and get your blood circulating brings your stress level down. You’ll come back feeling energized and ready to tackle your next project!
4. Snuggle with a puppy. Pretty self-explanatory right? (Note: feel free to sub cats, rabbits, babies, etc. for puppies.)
5. Outsource. Working with a team? Have a great host committee? Delegate tasks from your to-do list to people who are interested in helping you. Result? To-do list shrinks, stress level shrinks.
6. Make a list. Feeling overwhelmed? Make a list of everything you need to do and cross off items as you finish. Having a visual representation of your list getting shorter and shorter will make your stress level drop. 7. Take a shower. There’s no scientific evidence to back this up, but all of my best ideas come from the shower. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it’s one of the only places you can’t bring your phone, or maybe it has something to do with the sound of rushing water — whatever it is, there’s something therapeutic and relaxing about standing under hot water for a few minutes.
